Lindy Sellers: A Southern Lady
Dear ladies, it is with great pleasure that I introduce you to the extraordinary Lindy Sellers. I discovered her and her content a few months ago and I was blown away by her charm, talent, beauty, and sense of humor. Lindy is a devoted wife, mother of three, artist, homesteader, writer, youtuber, image consultant, and more!
Welcome, Lindy, to The Not-So Desperate Housewives community! I absolutely love your YouTube channel and Diary of Domesticity Radio show. You have so many talents – I don’t know where to begin! How about you tell us a little bit about how you became a homemaker.
Thank you! I am honored that you asked me to do this interview. You have created such a lovely community of like-minded ladies and I am happy to be part of that.
Life is full of so many wonderful things; I want to try them all before my time on earth is finished. I guess that is why I am interested in so much.
I met my husband when we were only fifteen years old! We were both swimming at a pool in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. We dated all through high school and college and married in 1995. I worked as a floral and cake designer until our first child was born in 1999.

It was never a question that I would go back to work after the babies came, but in order to do that, we had to make some changes. My husband got a better job and I learned how to be frugal with the finances so that we could work out our plan.
What was it like to homeschool three children back when it was not as socially acceptable as it is now?
In the early days it was difficult! Some of our family members were not happy about it, and that made things hard. We knew it was best for our own little family and were determined to do a great job.
I am happy to say that I have two college graduates and a seventeen year old who is in her second year of college. They are all hardworking and kind people who think of others, and I am grateful for that. One piece of advice I would give is to try and live close to family and friends when you are raising children.
We did not live close by our families and I regret that. Raising children is hard work and even more so, if you choose to home educate. You need the help and wisdom from older generations, and not having that support system can be difficult.
If you don’t live near family, be sure to make friends with older neighbors and other like-minded people. They are so valuable to have around to impart wisdom to you and your family (and when Mama needs a sanity break.)
Do you have any other advice for new moms?
Don’t be afraid or too proud to ask for help. Since I thought being a stay-at-home mother was “my job” I reckoned that I did not have the right to have help, and asking for help would be a bad reflection on my mothering skills.

Now that I am older, I realize I was wrong. I wish I could go back and do that over. Mothering is hard work, especially if you are homeschooling and doing it without any family support close by. You need a break from time to time and asking someone to babysit and give you time away, is good for you and your children.
That is such good advice. You are the author of four books – quite impressive! Could you tell us more about them?
Writing my first book was so much fun! I caught the bug and I wanted to write more. I did dream of writing books when I was young and was happy to have the opportunity.
My first book, From Farm to Market: Stories of Farmers and Artisans in the Carolina Piedmont is a good example of making a plan, setting a firm deadline and sticking to it. It was my first book and I was inspired to tell the unique and interesting stories of farmers and artisans that I got to know.
Seasons at Sweet Harvest Homestead is a compilation of articles that I wrote for our local newspaper over the course of a year and a half. It’s filled with slice of life stories about living on our Homestead.
Fancy the Country Bichon is a short book about our farm dog who also happens to be a frou frou dog and The Bohemian Lady’s Book of Wild Edibles covers a small handful of forageable foods that are found in the Carolina Piedmont.
They all sound lovely! You refer to yourself as an artist and teacher of the Home Arts. What exactly are the Home Arts? Were you taught them growing up or are you self-taught?
I am a watercolor artist and have sold many art cards and paintings for the past seven years. My work is by no means refined, but I find it relaxing and I was surprised when people said they wanted to buy it. The Home Arts are (to me) skills such as bread and jam making, soap making, sewing, candle making and keeping your home orderly.
I have taught classes in my home for almost twenty years on those old fashioned, but useful and fulfilling skills. My great Aunt Rosemary was a homemaker who did those sorts of things. Although she never taught me how, she was an early influence.
I am self-taught and am still learning from my many mistakes.
When did you become a certified image consultant? How can having your colors done help your overall appearance?
I have always enjoyed style and loved to help my friends find out what colors and clothing looked best on them! A few years ago, I decided to make it official and I became certified in Color Analysis through Color Alliance, and Image Consulting with Gilliam Amour at the Fashion Stylist Institute.
Since my children are grown up and don’t need me as much, I find it rewarding to go out into the community and help ladies with their fashion choices. Color Analysis is my favorite! The colors that you wear closest to your face reflect at a 45 degree angle and it makes such a difference in your appearance when you wear colors that harmonize with your skin, hair and eye color.
Color has the ability to make you go from pale and unhealthy looking to vibrant and full of life! Try it yourself. Put different colored clothing on, in warm and cool colors and watch the subtle changes in your appearance.
It is magic! Traditionally, color analysis is done in person and that is my favorite way because I love the personal interaction, but thanks to the internet, I can analyze colors online as well.
