Meet Sara Kessler of the Roses & Lilies lifestyle blog

Welcome back ladies, today we are thrilled to welcome Mrs. Sara Kessler to our community! Sara is a stay-at-home mom of two adorable girls (Penelope Rose and Emmeline Lilly) and one more on the way! She runs the gorgeous lifestyle blog Roses & Lilies as well as her beautiful instagram account.

How would you describe your aesthetic? Would you say that you felt free to express your femininity or were you ever ridiculed for it?

Iwould say my aesthetic is very classic and traditional with an emphasis in femininity, florals, and soft light colors. Since becoming a mother I completely overhauled my sense of style and design, as well as my way of thinking. So those have been some of my driving forces over the past few years.

Yes, femininity was always celebrated in my household. We lived in dresses, bows and curls. I have never been ridiculed for being feminine but as I got older I found it a little less understood. That seems to have changed significantly with today’s grandmillennial movement. Where we see pink and florals added in interior design as well as ruffles and bows in everyday fashion. I love it and find myself at home.

How did having a stay-at-home mom influence your decision to stay at home yourself once you became a mother?

It significantly influenced my decision to become one myself. My husband’s mother stayed home as well so it was a joint decision that was very important to us both.

My mother was always there from the minute we left for school to the minute we came home. She packed our lunches with sweet notes and cut our sandwiches into hearts or puzzle pieces. There was a lot of fun and laughter in our home. So once I decided to have children I wanted them to have what I had. It has been the greatest decision of my life. It is such a pleasure to carry on the tradition and I’m so blessed to be able to do so.

Would you say it is more accepted to be a stay-at-home in the South than in other parts of the United States?

There may be some truth to that. However, I really can’t say seeing that I’ve lived in the south all of my life. I believe, whatever a mother decides that works best for her and her family, whether it be to stay home or go back into the workplace, should be celebrated! Motherhood is a hard job within itself, therefore we should support each other’s decisions and lift one another other up.

What are the best and worst parts of being a stay-at-home mom?

The best parts of being a stay-at-home mom are that I get to spend all of my time with my children. I can help out at school and be at every class party. Bake with them and do crafts at home on their days off. I get to see all the moments of their lives, big or small, and create long lasting memories. That is truly so special and rewarding to me.

Some of the difficult parts about being a stay-at-home mom are that you can become somewhat cut off from the outside world and lacking in adult interaction. Especially when you have a spouse who travels. That can be hard at times. You can also lose a sense of identity outside of motherhood.

So I feel like it’s important to find some great like-minded mom friends. (which is something I think all moms can agree is a hard thing to do.) Also, having an outlet that can help you still feel connected to the parts of yourself that you love. That is one of the reasons I started my blog Roses & Lillies to cultivate my creativity and allow myself to grow in other areas.

How do you keep the romance alive in your marriage? Any Valentine’s Day tips?

A Valentine’s Day tip that is also a way we keep the romance alive in our marriage is:

After the girls go down for the night, we will set up a beautifully decorated table, either in our home or in our yard. Then we’ll cook an elaborate dinner. We will dine by music and candlelight and pop open a bottle of nice champagne. We often find ourselves talking for hours, laughing about our day, and gushing about our girls.

I know it sounds cliché, but it makes all the difference to just be able to sit and reconnect with each other. Sometimes it’s even more fun to be at home and not have to keep checking our phones for the time or make sure we are quick about getting home. It’s also comforting knowing the girls are just down the hall asleep in their beds.

I hope you enjoyed learning more about Sara.

Until next time,

xoxo, Mrs. Hannover
