7 Secrets to Royal Style

In honor of HM the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, here are seven secrets to royal style!

1.Pick a hairstyle and stick to it

Think about it, the Queen has sported the same hairstyle for decades as did Princess Diana, and the Duchess of Cambridge. Once you find a style and color that suits you and you love, commit to it forever.

Can you imagine Catherine wearing a pixie cut? Or Princess Diana with long tresses? I think not.

It might seem boring and unadventurous, but if you want to look royal, think long and hard about your preferred style and then never look back.

2. be Matchy-Matchy

I grew up with the idea that it was somehow not chic to look too matchy-matchy. So I deliberately did not match my shoes to my handbag or outfit. I thought this was more sophisticated somehow.

Looking back at photos from ages ago, I realize that I was wrong and the royals were right.

It is so timeless to wear matching accessories. Not only timeless but so practical and easy! My goodness, the time you will save!

Black shoes and bag? check. Blush pink heels and clutch? Check. Those are the bare essentials but they could theoretically last you a lifetime.

Don’t stop there, match your dress with your coat, shoes and bag. In fact, monochrome is the name of the game here.

3. Nude nails

No polish, clear polish, or at most pale pink polish! Wave goodbye to those gorgeous reds or daring bright colors. Do make sure your nails are clean, short, and well filed.

The Queen is rumored to wear Essie’s Ballet slippers. Kate hasn’t worn polish in years, claims this Glamour article, and I’m sure the Queen approves.

I personally love Dior Nail Glow (it claims to be an instant french manicure, which it absolutely is not). It’s a very quick way to make your nails look sophisticated and polished in no time.

4. Eyes over lips

You can accentuate the eyes as much as you like. Smokey eye, mascara, eyeliner etc. But heaven forbid you wear a red lip!

I love a bold lip color so I confess I would find this royal rule very difficult to follow. Nude lips or pink lips at most is what the royals are allowed to wear. Is it because drawing attention to one’s mouth is too provocative?

I personally find heavy eye makeup to be more outré than a red lip, but maybe that’s just me.

5. no diamonds before 6pm

With the exception of an engagement ring of course, keep those flashy jewels for special occasions only. You can safely wear simple pieces of jewelry, or pearls during the day. I suppose less is more when it comes to everyday jewelry etiquette if you want to look like a royal.

(Extra etiquette tip: tiaras can only be worn by married women (or on your wedding day). The exception to this is if you’re a royal princess by birth.)

6. always wear pantyhose

Yes, always. Even if it’s the middle of summer and you’re going to a boat party? Well, yes! It would be very improper for a lady to go anywhere without pantyhouse.

Can you imagine having to wear tights in the roasting heat? Yikes.

7. wear a subtle perfume

The Queen is rumored to love the fragrance White Rose by Creed and Catherine famously likes Orange Blossom by Jo Malone (she filled Westminster Abbey with perfumed candles for her wedding) as well as White Gardenia Petals by Illuminum.

Choose an airy scent and apply sparingly.
